Children and Youth

Sunday School

Children gather for Sunday School at 9:50 each Sunday between Labor Day and Memorial Day (with a few holiday exceptions).

Age 3 to Grade 1: Godly Play!

Children discover God, themselves, and one another through our sacred stories. Based on the Montessori tradition, Godly Play uses a careful telling of scripture stories, engaging story figures and activities to encourage children to seek and find answers to their faith questions. Godly Play respects the innate spirituality of children and encourages curiosity and imagination in experiencing the mystery and joy of God.

Grade 2-5: Living the Good News!

With crafts and other fun activities children learn about the Good News that Jesus is offering the church on a given Sunday. They follow the same schedule of readings used with the adults in church, so they can engage in conversation with their families throughout the week.

The children join the rest of the congregation around 10:45 and receive communion with their families. Following communion there is usually some time for the children to gather with the priest near the altar to share their Church School experience and talk about Jesus’ message.

Youth

Teens participate in worship and often serve as acolytes, who carry the cross and candles in the procession and assist the clergy. Older teens sometimes read in church and help administer the chalice. The Youth Group meets once a month, usually on the third Sunday, to do service projects and have fun together.

Our youth and children also participate in activities organized by Youth and Young Adult Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, including Happening and New Beginnings weekends for high school and junior high youth, summer camp for ages 7-17, and the annual mission trip to help with rebuilding the Gulf Coast, still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
